He Ran Away

Barry Deustch...Ran away. But that doesn't mean I didn't get some useful information!

Basically I went to his presentation (which was fabulously amusing) and then he was like "I see there are cartoonist in the audience, so feel free to come speak to me." And I was so going to go over, but then a friend asked me a question about AP Art. When I was done...he had his backpack on and sped out of the class room and I was like:

Yeah....Well anyway, I discovered that Mr. Deutsch and I had a lot in common. Such a procrastination. Best thing EVER.

Not really, but it's nice to know that I'm not alone.

His methods of completing pages using his Wacom Tablet (See Here) was cool but nothing I hadn't seen before. I really enjoyed his humore though! :)  Anywho, he apparently also has issues with completing work. I'm not sure if this is a trait of artists or just lazy people...probably the later. Which is bad. ah well.
Now back to doing work for this project.

Weekly Review 3

How much time did you spend on your project?
I have spent about 5 hours on various researches and blogging and more than 3 hours working hands on. More than 8 hours! Whoa.

What did you do for hands-on?

I have started to do the sketches for each page which will be then traced and then inked. They'll be awesome

What Research did you do?
I researched a variety of different Self Publishing companies, comparing them. Lulu.com and Dog Ear Publishing seem promising

Did you meet with your mentor? What did you talk about?
I did meet with Mrs. Spence. We talked about the speed in which I am working, figuring out deadlines and such. She suggested getting in contact with the Family Reading Partnership and gave advice on various visual aspects of my plan.

Were you in class this week?
Sure was. Late as always. MLK book given, got the community contacts sheet. Homework too.

What do you think your fulfillment of WISE requirements was?
I think I was a lot better this week about actually doing my work timely.  I made a goal sheet on Tuesday and I have accomplished most of the goals.
I have decided the size I am working with, I have begun to design the pages with more detail, chosen medium,  going to talk to Barry Deustch on Friday, have yet to contact Ann Mazer, had my Mentor Meeting, and I have done research. Awesome.

What are your plans for next week?
To continue researching further into publishing options, to continue to design the pages and get started  on inking some so I can work at home for the digital coloring.  Once  I have that, who knows how many hours I'll have. Set up interview or meet with Ann Mazer.

Goals For this Week

  • Decide on Size of  of pages. May just work on 12x8 1/2 water color paper (cut by self).
  • Design pages more in depth
  • Decided on inking by hand and coloring digitally. Methods with digital?
  • Talk to Barry Deustch (may be screwed up due to snow day)
  • Talk to Anne Mazer
  • Research costs of publishing vs. self publishing
  • Mentor Meeting Tuesday with Mrs. Spence
  • Do....more research.

Weekly Review 2

How much time did you spend on your project?
I spent the minimum 8 hours. Mostly through the use of my Art class as work time, and writing my three blogs.

What did you do for hands-on?
Redesigned the main character of my story. Almost done with the story board. Started on sketches of pages.

What Research did you do?
I looked at works of other successful children's book writers (Leo Lionni). Shared some videos that were animated versions of the books.

Did you meet with your mentor? What did you talk about?
Mrs. Spence was sick most of the week. Will talk to her 6th period today (Friday). She has it free so well do the meeting then.

Were you in class this week?
Yes, we watched the documentary by previous WISE students. Barnsong. And we got packets to look over for next Monday. Related works by previous WISE students.

What do you think your fulfillment of WISE requirements was?
I could have done more. I need to go look at more children's books. And I only did my journal entries in the past few days. Beginning of the week was slow.

What are your plans for next week?
Have other character designs completed. Share the story with some friends and get input. Talk to Barry Deutsch (Graphic Novelist) who is coming to the high school next week.  Decide what medium I am going to use for final pages: Digital or mixed media? Size?

Barry Deutsch

Next week I've been informed that there is a graphic novelist (Barry Deutsch) that is coming to the Ithaca school district. I was originally informed by Mrs. Gergley. I thought I would have to go to Fall Creek Elementary to meet up with him. Turns out he's also coming to the high school, which is awesome. I can more easily talk to him this way. That is one thing to look forward to next week!

I finished the character (re)design for my story, I'll upload that later today, after I edit it on the computer.

Other wise...I need to get a start on the sketches for each page. I need to think logically from now on. Yessssssssssssss. Planning...

MOTIVATIONAL POSTER!!!

I feel better already. :)
